Ag Commissioner Mike Strain to Address Screwworm Threat at Vernon Parish Cattlemen Meeting

The Vernon Parish Cattlemen Association will host Dr. Mike Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture at its summer Membership Meeting on July 10, 2026.  Dr. Strain will address the New World Screwworm infestation that is now threating Texas and New Mexico.  This is a serious pest that can infest any warm-blooded animal, including livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. The larvae burrows into the living tissue of animals, causing severe wounds, animal suffering and significant economic losses.

Texas ranchers have been bracing for screwworm infestation to cross into the U.S. for the past year, as the pest advanced north from Mexico.  Experts have predicted that a widespread outbreak could cost the state of Texas $2.8 billion in economic damage and devastate wildlife.  Currently the pest has been identified in 3 locations in Texas and one in New Mexico.

This situation is evolving and is very serious for all livestock owners, from commercial growers to family pets.  Dr. Strain will provide the latest information and the efforts for preventative treatment and eradication of this pest.
