The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam once again circulating in the parish in which callers are impersonating law enforcement officers in an attempt to solicit money.

According to the sheriff’s office, a resident recently reported being contacted by an individual claiming to be a police officer who referenced accurate information about a relative allegedly in law enforcement custody. The caller then falsely stated that the inmate would be required to complete anger management classes as part of bond conditions.

Authorities say the scam escalated when the caller instructed the resident to send payment for bond and related fees through Cash App and also mentioned cryptocurrency, including Bitcoin, as acceptable methods of payment.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not request bond payments or fees through Cash App, Bitcoin, or similar payment platforms, and they do not require payment for programs such as anger management in this manner.

Officials are urging residents to avoid engaging with callers making such requests and to independently verify any bond or incarceration information by contacting the jail directly using official phone numbers.

The department also advised that individuals who receive such calls should hang up immediately, block the number, and report the incident. Authorities noted that any money sent to scammers is not recoverable.

Residents are encouraged to remain cautious, as similar impersonation scams have been reported in other areas as well.
