These days are the lazy, hazy days of summer, and everybody has an agenda for late summer fun. Vacation time, visits to the lake, working ’round the house, all good pursuits. Just know the school year is approaching and everybody’s routine will be different then, whether you have kids in school or not! This week we turn to the National Calendar for a little entertainment.
Friday, July 19: NATIONAL PLAY DAY– This gives you the right to tell your boss you are not coming in but playing instead. Staying home and playing…then you wake up!!
NATIONAL DAIQUIRI DAY– Especially important to the South, where you can just drive right up and get you one! Please don’t drink and drive! If you add a shot of 190 to your frozen delight, you will fall asleep peacefully in your lawn chair.
Saturday, July 20: NATIONAL MOON DAY – Celebrates the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Walter Cronkite told me and millions all we needed to hear about the moon landing. Go see the new movie “Fly Me to the Moon”. It’s great fun! There is no green cheese on the moon by the way!
NATIONAL PENNSYLVANIA DAY– Second state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. My state of birth. My parents were from western PA; I was born on the NE side of the state. The Keystone State. Geaux Pirates and Steelers!
NATIONAL LOLLILPOP DAY– We used to get one from the doctor or barber when we were good. Some people look “fly” with a lollipop stuck in their mouths. Tootsie Roll Pops changed the lollipop game big time. I like the old school lollies with the soft bendable stick, but they are hard to find!
NATIONAL FORTUNE COOKIE DAY – Have you ever had a fortune from one come true? I love them when they are fresh. Sounds like Chinese take out for dinner!
Sunday, July 21: NATIONAL BE SOMEONE DAY– Get dressed up like someone famous and go shopping or dining. You will turn heads; OR just be yourself, knowing you are special to many!
NATIONAL JUNK FOOD DAY– Hoo boy!! It is not right for it to fall on a Sunday and tempt you into missing Granny’s Sunday dinner. No, junk food is not good for you, but it’s a “guilty pleasure.” We all love a little “guilty pleasure.” What is junk food to one person may be another’s best meal of the day! You want fries with that Big Mac?
NATIONAL ICE CREAM DAY– It is always the third Sunday in July. I LOVE ICE CREAM!! If you don’t eat a scoop or two today, well that is just un-American.
Your weekend assignment is to play all weekend, with a daiquiri nearby, stare at the moon, get your favorite flavor sucker, order some great house fried rice, and eat all the junk food you want. Finish the weekend with two scoops of your favorite ice cream. Can you handle this assignment?
