Remembering Donald R. Beltz

Donald R. Beltz, age 89, passed away peacefully at home on May 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 21, 1936, in Leesville to George and Helen Beltz, Donald lived a life defined by courage, strength, faith, and unwavering love for his family.

Donald was truly larger than life — fearless, strong, and full of joy. He carried a big smile that could light up a room and a presence that made everyone around him feel safe and loved. To his family, he was a protector, a teacher, and the steady foundation they could always depend on.

At just 17 years old, Donald answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Navy.

He proudly served during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars serving as flight crew chief and instructor. After 20 years of military service, he decided to return home to Vernon Parish and began another 25 years of service with the Louisiana State Police at Troop E, where he found great purpose in helping others and serving his community. During his time as a state trooper, he spent seven years on the Tactical Unit and has worked several details including the New Orleans Police Strike, five Mardi Gras details, the 1984 World’s Fair, the Republican National Convention, two hurricane details, and the Oakdale Federal Prison riot, and was detailed to assist with the LSP VASCAR Program. Donald’s dedication and character earned him numerous honors including one ACE Award, the 1979 American Legion Law Officer of the Year Award, the 1989 and 1990 Veterans of Foreign Wars Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award, and his most distinguished recognition as the 1989 Louisiana State Trooper of the Year.

Donald was a devoted husband and family man who shared 65 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Evelyn. Together they built a life rooted in faith, love, and family. He was a proud father to Beverly Moreno of Tucson, Arizona, and Carrie Beltz of Leesville, Louisiana.

Though he accomplished much in life, Donald’s favorite role was being “Poppa.” His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of his life. Whether working in his garden, spending hours on his tractor, enjoying fast cars, flying, or scuba diving, Donald embraced life fully and fearlessly.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Beltz.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn Beltz; daughters Beverly Moreno and Carrie Beltz; grandchildren Kristin Boswell, Bailey Haro, and Katarina Kay and husband Jacob; and great-grandchildren Harper, Sorin, and Lucy, along with countless family members and friends whose lives were forever impacted by his strength, kindness, and love.
