For the first time all season, all three Vernon Parish football teams held second-half leads in the same week.
But the way each team came about those leads, and what happened after, varied.
Leesville (4-5, 3-1 District 3-4A) faced two separate two-touchdown deficits against Eunice, but the Wampus Cats leaned on the arm of quarterback Trel Broom to mount a comeback in a 36-34 win.
Rosepine (0-9, 0-2 District 4-2A) led in the second half for the first time all year, but DeQuincy hit the gas in the second half of a 33-18 win.
Pickering (4-5) scored its go-ahead touchdown with more than six minutes left to knock off Ringgold, 32-28.
LEESVILLE
Leesville didn’t have early answers for Eunice’s (3-7, 1-3 District 3-4A) misdirection running attack, but the Wampus Cats hung tough and mounted a comeback on the arm of Broom.
Broom threw for five touchdowns with 207 passing yards on 12-of-17 as the passing game broke through while running game served as a stable table setter.
Grant Braxton collected his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season with his 102 yards on 23 touches and one touchdown.
But it was Broom, and receiver Julius Brown (eight catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns), that put up the points on Eunice.
Michael Davis Jr. was another integral part of the attack with two touchdowns on four catches for 57 yards.
Trailing 34-22, Leesville scored the final two touchdowns and the accompanying Ced Moore extra points that proved to be the difference.
The win all but secures second place in the district and a first-round home playoff game as Leesville sits at No. 14 in Division II Select.
Leesville has won three straight games after a 1-5 start.
PICKERING
Pickering won its second game in a row with the road win at Ringgold (3-6) and secured its second straight season of at least four wins.
Ringgold dealt the first blow to lead 8-0, but an explosive Pickering second quarter put the Red Devils up 16-14 and 24-20.
The Redskins took their final lead (28-24) early in the fourth quarter, but Pickering responded quickly and scored the go-ahead touchdown with more than six minutes remaining.
The Red Devils’ defense took care of it from there, halting Ringgold’s offense that allowed the 32-28 score to stand.
Pickering is attempting to end its season with a three-game winning streak for the second straight season as Week 10 features a trip to winless Plain Dealing.
ROSEPINE
Rosepine built an 18-13 lead thanks to some creative play calling and execution, but the Eagles couldn’t contain DeQuincy quarterback Turner Rodriguez to pull out their first win of the season.
Rodriguez threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another in the win.
After Rosepine struck first, Rodriguez scrambled and weaved through the Rosepine defense for a 20-yard touchdown run to grab a 7-6 lead.
The Eagles retook the lead after a 50-yard Sley Gardner shovel pass to Brynnum Chaney set up Rosepine’s second touchdown.
But defensive miscues loomed large in the DeQuincy comeback as Rodriguez connected with an uncovered receiver for a 77-yard strike that allowed the Tigers to build on their 20-18 lead.
Rodriguez finished with 306 passing yards on 20-of-25 and added 51 rushing yards.
