Vernon Parish Police Jury Met February 10

The Vernon Parish Police Jury met in a special called session at 4:50 p.m., Monday, February 10, before the regular meeting at 5 p.m.

Jurors adopted a resolution calling for a special election on Saturday, May 3, for the Parish of Vernon, State of Louisiana, to authorize the renewal of sales and use taxes therein, making application to the State Bond Commission and providing for other matters.  Jurors approved the special election resolution.

During the regular meeting that followed, Jurors heard from Mr. Michael Nichols on the subject of Carbon Capture Sequestration.  Nichols backs the Police Jury’s stance in opposing this technology locally.  He asked Jurors to place this measure on the ballot to let residents decide whether they want their lives impacted by this technology.

Nichols has organized a Town Hall meeting at Pitkin High School for Saturday, March 1 at 6 p.m.  This meeting will discuss the proposed CO2 site in Crosby Pasture.  The public is invited.  Nichols is organizing a similar meeting for Leesville residents later this month or early March.

The Capitol Properties Committee will renew the lease for the maintenance yard for Districts 1,4,8,and 9. The previous leaseholder is deceased.  The twenty-year lease agreement is now with Ms. Anita Jeane, effective March 1,2025

The Economic Development Committee of the jury moved that Rhonda Plummer, Dale Peterson, and Larry Miller be appointed to the Vernon Parish Economic Development Board of Commissioners.

The Personnel Committee approved the 2025 holiday schedule for Police Jury employees.  The next scheduled day off is Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 17.  Tuesday, March 4, will be a Mardi Gras holiday, and Good Friday will be a day off on March 19.

The Road Maintenance and Construction Committee approved resolutions to perform routine maintenance work inside the Town of Rosepine and Village of Simpson. Requests were heard from the Vernon Parish School Board for dirt at the Hornbeck High School baseball complex and for dirt to block an unsafe road on the back side of Anacoco Elementary.

The next meeting of the Vernon Parish Police Jury will be Monday, March 10, at 5 p.m.
