You can thank the National Day Calendar for opening this can of worms.
Today is National Raisin Bran Cereal Day. Bran flakes like these have been around since the early days of Kellogg’s and Post cereals. Health benefits and all aside: no taste, wet cardboard consistency, bleecchh! Put some raisins in it and VOILA! it becomes edible. Nowadays they’re adding granola clusters and 3x the raisins. Whatever it takes to make it taste better than Grape Nuts. PS..it really is good for you.
Today is also National Bundt Cake Day. You know it’s a bundt by the distinctive shape and those ridges that hold the icing. This is a wonderful thing to celebrate! You can even find baked goods stores that sell nothing but mini bundt cakes. Bundt; the d is silent, and it has nothing to do with baseball!
This is Clean out the Refrigerator Day! Some will run from the task. What to do with a piece of this, a chunk of that, a smidge of…what was this? We love the challenge at our casa. Try making a breakfast frittata out of all that stuff with 4-6 eggs, cheese, leftover breakfast proteins, a little onion, shredded carrot, green or red peppers, a couple of chopped spinach leaves, a touch of milk or cream, a few seasonings — whatever you like. Use what you have. Mix well and pour into a greased pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees ’til the middle is set. Cool, slice and serve. Look, the fridge is cleaned out!
Today is also America Recycles Day. Once upon a time, America Recycles Day made a difference. Even though millions of Americans will do their part today, it can seem like a losing battle. What can you do or say to someone to make them understand their litter is choking our eco-systems?
Plastic water bottles are the absolute #1 problem in this country today! 60 million of them fill our waterways and landfills-EVERY DAY! Wrap your head around that. Fast-food trash ranks #2.
Some folks recycle daily; yes, it’s a chore but it matters. The City of Leesville has a recycling Center on Redtown Road, and a new recycling business recently opened next to Burger King. It was a good thing years ago and a better thing today. Give it a try!
The pictures at the top of this story are from Washed Ashore, a company based in Oregon that reclaims trash from our oceans and turns it into art. The pictures above were taken when the art was posted around Galveston, Texas, as a reminder. Can you find a toy car bumper, a shovel, water bottles, beach toys and more on the shark sculpture? What about the penguin? Can you find the lighters, golf balls, a refrigerator door, soccer balls, or toothbrushes?
Years ago, the Bass & Bow Outdoors Shop in Leesville sponsored the Great Mothers Day Canoe Race on Toro Bayou. A group of scuba divers came out and pulled trash out of Toledo Bend. Trolling motors, coolers, paddles, clothing, glass bottles, rods/reels, and more were brought up from the bottom. It was hard to believe back then. Sure, it’s even worse now!
Helps you put it all into perspective. We can all do better! No littering this weekend! Please?
