The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a jury duty scam that is once again circulating throughout the parish.
According to the sheriff’s office, citizens have reported receiving phone calls from the number 337-238-1311 in which the caller falsely identifies themselves as a Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy. During the call, the individual claims the recipient missed jury duty and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest.
The caller then tells the victim that they can avoid arrest by paying a fine using gift cards or by providing credit card information. Officials confirmed these calls are fraudulent.
The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office emphasized that deputies will never contact citizens by phone to demand payment, request gift cards, or collect credit card information. Any money sent to scammers is nonrecoverable.
Residents who receive such calls are advised to hang up immediately and not provide any personal or financial information. Anyone who wishes to verify the legitimacy of a call may contact the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office directly at 337-238-1311.
