The Vernon Parish Animal Shelter is facing an urgent overcrowding crisis after more than 30 dogs were seized Wednesday in what officials described as a hoarding and neglect case.
According to those assisting with the response, the dogs were found in extremely poor condition and are now receiving care at the shelter. The sudden intake has placed the facility in an immediate “mayday” situation, stretching resources beyond capacity.
A local rescue group and volunteers have already stepped in, tagging approximately half of the dogs for rescue placement. However, those groups report they are already full and exhausted, with limited space and resources remaining.
Community members are being asked to help urgently through donations and support. Financial contributions will go toward emergency care, food, medical treatment and ongoing shelter needs.
Donations can be made via Venmo at Paws4Millie, PayPal at BrookeBailey394903, or through Facebook Pay. Those donating are asked to list the subject line as “Vernon neglected dogs.”
In addition, donations toward veterinary care can be made directly by calling Hayes Veterinary Clinic in DeRidder, where some of the dogs are expected to receive treatment.
Volunteers say public support is critical in the coming days to ensure the dogs receive the care they need and to prevent further strain on the shelter and rescue partners.
Residents are encouraged to share the call for help widely and consider donating, fostering, or assisting in any way possible to support the animals affected by this case.
