The City of Leesville held the grand opening of the new Leesville Event Center Friday, March 15, with a ribbon cutting and reception. The building can be used for a variety of meetings, gatherings, conventions and concerts. The Leesville Event Center is located on Nolan Trace (West TX Highway) and formerly housed the Piggly Wiggly grocery store and a church.
The nearly 22,000 square-foot space will house the Mayor’s Youth Council and the Mayor’s Women’s Commission. There are conference rooms, a full-service kitchen and dining area, a large auditorium space, and a permanent stage. The City of Leesville will staff the facility with a person to handle event scheduling. The Kingdom Center of DeRidder has entered into an agreement with the City to provide organized activities and programs on a daily basis. The Kingdom Center operates a similar program for DeRidder area youth. The facility is equipped with big screen TV’s, audio systems, and computer stations.
The Leesville Event Center is available to the public for rent. The city envisions weddings, family gatherings, civic group functions, concerts, and more in the facility. Jennifer Paddy will handle management/scheduling of the facility. She may be reached at 337-239-2444.
There are a variety of rental options, from multiple size rooms to kitchen/dining rooms. The large auditorium space is nearly 8,000 square feet with all convention features. Contact Ms. Paddy or visit the City of Leesville website for more information.

American Legion (Retired) Post 387 in New Llano will sponsor a Community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 30, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the New Llano City Park.
Bring the family out for hot dogs, hamburgers, and soft drinks. There are chances to win bicycles and gift cards. The Easter Bunny has sent word ahead that he is bringing plenty of candy for kids of all ages!
This event is free and open to the public.

The coming of Easter means spring is here, although the official first day of spring was March 21. It seems a little early this year; blame it on that leap year thing! Spring means new life, awakening, and sunshine as local farmers and gardeners get those crops ready to grow.
We look forward to coming days when those crops are put up for sale at the Leesville Farmers Market on lower Third Street. Last weekend’s trip to the market yielded some great goodies. Never come home from the market empty handed! The selections will surprise you, even during the winter months when fresh items are scarce. This last trip was good for some tangerine/orange jelly, cherry pepper jelly, honey-pecan cream cheese schmear, two slices of pineapple upside down dessert and some Ogre Ears. The plant was from a new vendor, Jasmine Watson of Watson Farms. Mentioning that my wife does well with succulents, she steered me to a $4 starter pot. Lovely wife loved it!! Area talent is on full display at the market with things to wear, display, eat, and grow!
The Leesville Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The spaces under the pavilion are spoken for, but for no cost you can bring tables, chairs, and products to sell. The second Saturday of the month is always a bigger market with more vendors than normal. Contact Tammy Anderson at 337-424-1109 for availability for the Second Saturday Market. Some fees may apply for the Second Saturday Market.
Here’s a tip of the hat to Ms. Kathy Johnson of Pitkin, who may have the longest tenure at the Leesville market. She always features creative baked goods, homemade sweets, jars full of goodness, and more. Try one of her meat pies, fried up fresh!
The Lewises are another staple at the market. Rosalie is an accomplished baker and canner, while Albert is an excellent peanut roaster and grower. Their produce is great, and their table is always full of goodies. Sheila and Freddie Fair feature pickled eggs, fresh eggs, veggies, breads, canned items, and all manner of jellies, and they do it with a smile! Long-time area giftmaker Jessica Ashworth, offers one-of-a-kind gift items and artwork. Grab some locally sourced honey and say goodbye to those pesky local allergies!
Just wait till the strawberries from C&M Farms come in, and that great fresh spinach from the Hicks Produce Stand. Then come the new potatoes, ripe tomatoes, squash, cabbage, and more. Whatever happened to those fresh mushrooms from the guys in Hornbeck a couple of years ago? I confess to bringing home in the last few months hummus, salsa, snack crackers, jerky, kimchee, sauerkraut, pickles, jams, and more. All of them just screamed to come home with me!
The next Second Saturday Market is April 13, so get yourself ready for a treat and visit the Leesville Farmers Market on lower Third Street. I promise you’ll find something to take home!
P.S. The Easter bunny is there tomorrow (Saturday) from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., so you can get in a good early word!

The Leesville City Council met Monday, March 25, in regular session, dealing with bills, invoices, the introduction of Ordinance 3 of 2024, and multiple resolutions.
Monthly bills totaled $97,323.12. Pay requests were received from Eyecatcher Signs and Norred Fire Systems for the newly opened Leesville Event Center. The two requests totaled $24,076.75 and were to be taken from the state general fund for building repairs under Act 397. There were three pay requests on the north ramp taxiway and drainage project at the Leesville Municipal Airport. Requests from Infrastructure Consulting and Engineering were for $17,596 and $1207.15. The requests from Williams Equipment Services totaled $62,647.06.
City Engineer Mark McCarty told the Council members he would announce bids during the first meeting in April on Phase 2 of city street repairs.
Ordinance 3 of 2024 was introduced. It approves a certain parcel of A7 multi-family district zoned property to C3 neighborhood commercial district to align the property at 303 N. First Street to establish a current residential structure for use as a law office. A public hearing will be held on the matter April 8.
Resolutions were introduced to advertise for bids on a one-ton truck for the public Works Department, submit a change for the taxi lane construction project at the Leesville Municipal Airport, declared some city equipment surplus, and resolved to end the city moratorium on development, permitting, and announcing to follow an adoption of a new ordinance for development of manufactured homes, mobile homes, house trailers, modular homes, or code-approved tiny homes and portable buildings on properties zoned A7 through A8.
The City Council also heard a resolution to approve a wholesale Class B alcohol permit application for Mockler Beverage Company-West LLC. Mockler is the new company that bought out Southwest Beverage, the longtime Budweiser and related products dealer.
The next City Council meeting will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Leesville City Hall.

On March 23, 2024, at approximately 12:40 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a one-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 496 near Cooper Road. This crash claimed the life of 61-year-old Maxwell Smith of DeRidder.
The initial investigation revealed that a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle, driven by Smith, was westbound on Louisiana Highway 496. For reasons still under investigation, Smith failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. As a result, the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curve warning sign, and sequentially ejected Smith from the vehicle.
Smith, who was wearing a non-DOT approved helmet, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
Troopers encourage all riders to take an approved motorcycle safety course. These courses teach safe riding practices and help you apply safe riding strategies that can help reduce your chance of injury should a crash occur.
Making good choices while riding a motorcycle, such as never driving while impaired and obeying all traffic laws, can often mean the difference between life and death. If motorists witness hazardous situations they may dial *LSP (*577) to be connected to the nearest Troop to report that activity.
In 2024, Troop E Troopers have investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities.

The reception Saturday night, March 23, at Gallery One EIIIEVEN in downtown Leesville featured the work of artists from Beauregard Parish, who normally display their work at Real Art DeRidder (RAD) Gallery in DeRidder.
