The continuing wildfires in West Central Louisiana have produced many stories of valor and sacrifice on the part of emergency personnel and first responders.
On September 13, 2023, Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft recognized three deputies who went above and beyond the call of duty in assisting local residents in distress. Life Saving Awards were presented to Deputy Tyler Sandell, who pulled an elderly female from her burning home. Deputies Aaron Barbee and Devon Vargas were noted for rendering aid to an unresponsive subject during a medical emergency.
Sheriff Craft said that his entire department was proud of the deputies and their service to Vernon Parish citizens.
